James S. Colavito attended Rutgers University for a Bachelor's Degree and then Fordham University for a Juris Doctor.

He is a member of the New Jersey Bar and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

He is a member of the Morris County Bar Association; past President of the Rotary Club of Whippany, New Jersey; twice awarded "Rotarian of the Year" by the Whippany Rotary Club; and twice received the "Service Above Self Award" from the Whippany Rotary Club
